Who is RAC?

Originally, founded as the Automobile Club of Great Britain in 1897, RAC was the first organisation to introduce uniformed patrols in 1901 and was given royal approval by King Edward VII in 1907.

Over the years the RAC has constantly innovated to meet the needs of its members. In 1912, it introduced roadside emergency telephone boxes while in 2000 it became the first breakdown company to develop a recovery towing system that could be deployed from the back of one of its patrol vans.

Fast forward to 2022, and the RAC was the first to launch an all-electric patrol van. Today, all RAC patrols are equipped with the latest mobile diagnostic equipment – RAC Scan - enabling them to identify faults that would otherwise need to be dealt with by a garage.

As standard, every RAC van carries more than 500 parts and tools which patrols use to fix four out of five breakdowns on the spot. With its headquarters in Walsall in the West Midlands, and offices in Salford and Bristol, the RAC employs 4,000 dedicated staff.
