"If you’re using a tipper truck, it's essential to have the right insurance. That's because tippers have unique risks that come with hauling and tipping heavy loads. Tipper insurance goes beyond standard van cover because it considers how you use the vehicle, including transporting goods or working on construction sites. Remember, if you commute with your tipper – even if it's just to get to a job site – this counts as business use. Be clear with your insurer about all your activities to make sure you’re fully protected."
What types of tipper insurance do I need?
As tippers are work vehicles, you're likely to need commercial van insurance in place. There are two main types you can opt for:
Carrying your own goods.
A standard commercial van insurance policy should cover you if you're carrying your own goods, materials or equipment for your own company.
If you're carrying goods belonging to someone else.
To get cover for other people's property, such as soil or sand, gravel and aggregates or agricultural goods, you should look into haulage cover. In other words, hire and reward insurance.
What levels of insurance do I need for a tipper van?
Generally speaking, there are 3 levels of cover to consider when taking out tipper insurance:
Third party
Third-party, fire and theft
Comprehensive
It's also worth considering taking out public liability insurance. While not a legal requirement, this could cover you if a member of the public gets injured. Or if their property gets damaged while loading or unloading, for instance.
Why is tipper insurance so expensive?
According to our data, the average tipper insurance cost is £1058.94*, whereas for a van it's £729.31*.
The cost of tipper insurance varies depending on a number of factors. In addition to the truck's weight, engine size and mileage, it also takes your personal details into consideration - such as your age, location and driving history.
All the same, insuring a tipper truck is likely to be costly – certainly much more so than regular van insurance. This is in part because of the cost of materials you're likely to be transporting, but also because a tipper is a big old unit.

How to save on tipper insurance
- Compare quotes. When it comes to finding cheaper tipper insurance, shopping around is key. It's always a good idea to compare a range of quotes from multiple providers to find the right cover at the right price.
- Increase van security. Keep your tipper in a secure facility when not in use. And you could also look into additional security features for the vehicle itself.
- Choose a higher excess. Opting for a higher voluntary excess will usually push the cost of insurance down, as you're accepting more of the risk. Don't set it at a level you couldn't afford if you need to make a claim though.
- Maintain a clean driving record. Drivers with claims and convictions usually pay more for the privilege, so try to keep your nose clean.
- Pay annually. Paying insurance in monthly instalments usually means you're also paying interest, so it's best to pay the whole year upfront if you can.
What extras might I need?
If you need additional cover, you may be able to get optional extras for a fee. It's worth checking to see if your chosen insurer offers the following:
- Breakdown cover in case your tipper truck breaks down and needs to be repaired.
-
Legal expenses cover to pay for legal fees if you need to make a claim against someone, or they make a claim against you.
-
Driving abroad cover if you need to make deliveries or pick up cargo from the continent.
- Courtesy van cover so you're provided with an alternative vehicle if your usual tipper's out of action.
-
Windscreen cover to repair or replace a cracked or chipped windscreen, or any other windows.
-
Personal effects cover protects your personal belongings such as your tools while they're in your tipper.

Types of van insurance
FAQs
Can I get multi-van insurance to include my tipper?
If you or your company has multiple vehicles you want to insure, you may be able to cover them under a single multi-van or fleet policy. The main benefits of this are the policies are easier to administer, as there's only one renewal date, and they can often work out cheaper than multiple policies.
What exactly insurers cover will vary between providers, so be sure to look into the policy carefully before you buy.
How does my business type affect my premium?
Your business type is likely to have a big impact on your premium. If you're mainly shifting sand, for example, then it'll probably cost less than if the tipper's used for transporting expensive or hazardous materials. Essentially, the more risky the business, the higher premium is likely to be.
What should I consider when choosing tipper insurance?
The right policy for your tipper will always be the one that suits your exact circumstances.
Firstly, it's important to compare policies which cover your requirements. Think about who's driving the vehicle. If it's just you and one other person driving it, add them as a named driver rather than buying an any driver policy. This could work out cheaper.
Think about what add-ons you absolutely need, and which you can do without.
In addition to the level of cover, it's worth checking online reviews to find out more about the insurance provider's reputation.
Finally, there's of course the cost element. It's best not to sacrifice cover you might need just to save money. But comparing different providers will help you to find the right policy at a cheaper price.
Will the black box interfere with my van?
A black box device shouldn’t interfere with your driving, your van or any of its systems. While it reports information on your driving back to the insurance company, you shouldn’t even be aware of it while you’re on the road.
If you notice anything unusual or suspect your black box is affecting your van in any way, contact your insurer who should investigate.
