Information on van makes

If you're looking to buy a van, there's truckloads of choice out there. The make and model you choose will have a bearing on numerous things. Such as how it drives, what features it comes with, plus availability of parts.

And, of course, it'll influence the cost of your van insurance. Whether you're looking for a regular van or a pick-up. Or need something more heavyweight like a tipper for work, our guide to van manufacturers can help you cover all bases before you buy.

Ford

Famously the first manufacturer of mass-produced motor vehicles, Ford introduced the Transit Van in 1965. This was a huge step forward, as not only was it durable and versatile, but it moved vans towards a more car-like driving experience.

Nowadays, Ford accounts for the two top-selling light commercial vehicles (LCV) in the UK, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) data. In second place is the larger Ford Transit, with the top slot being occupied by the mid-sized Ford Transit Custom.

If you're thinking of investing in one of the two most popular vans in the UK – or alternatively in the smaller Transit Courier or Ford Transit Connect – look into Ford van insurance.

Nissan

Nissan's first foray into light commercial vehicles was the Nissan Caball truck, first produced in 1957 and popular in South East Asia. It now produces a range of versatile and reliable vans. Such as the mid-sized Primastar, the spacious Interstar, and models with more robotic names such as the NV200 and NV400.

Nissan embraced sustainability and launched the all-electric e-NV200 in 2014. So if you'd like to go electric – and reduce your tax and ULEZ charges – this is worth looking into.

Volkswagen (VW)

Already a renowned auto manufacturer, VW began van production in 1950 with the launch of the Type 2, also known as the Transporter or Kombi. Today, the modernised versatile VW Transporter is the 6th best-selling LCV in the UK in 2024 (year to November). In addition, the manufacturer's range includes the compact VW Caddy and the spacious VW Crafter.

And moving away from commercial vehicles for a moment, there's also the iconic VW Campervan, the instantly recognisable legend derived from the Transporter.

But if you're looking for a regular VW van, look into Volkswagen van insurance.
