What insurance do I need for a catering van?

All motor vehicles which drive on UK roads need to be insured. So you'll need van insurance at the very least, so you can drive legally.

But it's worth looking into other policies to help protect your business. For example, you might consider taking out a business insurance policy for things like business interruption or damage to your equipment. And as you're dealing with customers, you could look into public liability insurance in case someone gets injured while visiting your food van, or falls ill.

You might even look into specialist catering van insurance, as some providers could provide bespoke cover for your exact needs. This can be useful, as you could get a single policy to protect all aspects of your business, rather than several different ones.

What types of insurance can I get?

When you look into any type of van insurance policy, there are 3 levels of cover to choose from:

Third-party only (TPO)

This is the most basic level of cover, the minimum required to drive legally in the UK. You're covered for injuries you cause other road users or damage to their property. But damage to your own van isn't included.

Third-party, fire and theft (TPFT)

Here you have the same protection as third-party cover. But you're also covered if your van needs to be repaired or replaced because it's been stolen, or damaged by fire.

Fully comprehensive

The highest level of cover, which protects you financially if you're injured, or if your van is damaged. It also includes everything you get with TPFT cover - but it isn't necessarily the most expensive. Always compare to be sure.

How much is catering van insurance?

Specialist catering van insurance policies are likely to be more expensive than regular van insurance. Because of the way it's used and the equipment inside, a catering vans need more protection than a regular van. But for the extra cover for your business, you may feel this is worth it.

Prices will also vary depending your age, location, annual mileage, what kind of van you drive, your personal driving history and so on. And when you're pitched up, there are other factors which have a bearing on the cost. For example, you're likely to have to pay a bit more if you're using cooking equipment in the van rather than, say, if you have an ice cream van.

According to our data, the average annual insurance policy for a catering van is £998.27*. By contrast, getting insurance for a regular van costs £729.31* a year on average. So that's a difference of £268.96 for protecting your business, rather than just getting typical vehicle cover.

How can I get cheap catering van insurance?

There are a few things you can do to reduce the cost of your catering van insurance. Stepping up security is worth doing in itself, but could also lead to cheaper premiums. Look into getting alarms to protect your van and stock, or a steering lock to make it harder to pinch. And try to keep it locked up in a garage and off the road when unattended.

Your driving will influence the cost of cover too. Keep a clean driving record if possible. Plus a higher mileage tends to lead to more costly cover, so try to limit driving your van to business use only if you can. If you have a different vehicle for personal use, all the better.

Finally, compare a range of catering van insurance policies from different providers. This way you can see van insurance deals side-by-side, and more easily pick the cover level that suits your circumstances, at a price that's right.

What are the benefits of catering van insurance?

Mobile caterers can benefit from a good catering van insurance policy in a number of ways.

  • Financial protection
  • Cover unexpected costs like repairs, accidents, and damage to keep your business running smoothly.

  • Reputation protection
  • Maintain your reputation by getting your van back on the road faster, reducing downtime that could affect your business.

  • Business continuity
  • Cover if your business is interrupted for certain reasons, such as illness, theft or equipment failure.

  • Flexibility
  • You can tailor your policy to specific catering businesses, from sandwich vans to full mobile kitchens.

How do I make a claim?

If something happens with your catering van and you need to make a claim, take the following steps:

  • Find your policy documents. Before getting in touch with your insurer, find your documents and policy number. It may help to familiarise yourself with the policy terms related to the incident too.
  • Take photos. It can help speed things up if you can provide photo evidence, such as of a break-in, equipment damage and so on.
  • Contact your insurer. You may have the option to contact them via app, online chat or by phone.
  • Explain what happened. Be as accurate as possible, giving times and relevant details.
  • Provide evidence. You may be asked to supply evidence such as photos, receipts and bills for repairs. It's likely you can do this digitally, but if you need to send anything by post, be sure to keep copies.

It's always best to inform your insurer of any incident promptly, but make sure you gather all the details you need first. Being organised and accurate will hopefully speed up you claim, and get you back in business as quickly as possible.
