Does each traveller have to pay the tourist tax?

In most cases, yes—tourist tax is charged per person, per night. But, some destinations might calculate it per room instead. To avoid any surprises, it’s a good idea to check with your accommodation provider.
The tricky part? Tourist tax isn’t the same everywhere. For example, in Greece, tourist tax can range from €1.50-€10 per person, per night. Meanwhile, in the Balearic Islands, including Ibiza, Menorca, and Majorca, the fee is usually between €1-€4 per person, per night.

When do I have to pay tourist tax?

Tourist taxes are typically paid directly to your accommodation—either when you check in or at the end of your stay when you settle your bill. It’s usually bundled into your final payment, so you won’t need to worry about separate transactions.
If you’re staying in alternative accommodation like Airbnb, you might be asked to pay upfront as part of the booking process. Either way, it’s always a good idea to double-check how and when the tax will be collected.

If I'm travelling to multiple locations, do I pay a tourist tax in each?

It depends on whether each location you’re visiting charges a tourist tax. Some countries have it nationwide, while others might only enforce it in certain cities or regions, especially in popular tourist hotspots.

The amount you pay can also vary from place to place.

For example, in Greece, tourist tax can range from €1.50-€10 per person, per night. Meanwhile, in the Balearic Islands, including Ibiza, and Majorca, the fee is usually between €1-€4 per person, per night.

What happens if you don't pay tourist tax?

Not paying tourist tax can lead to issues with your accommodation. Hotels, holiday rentals, and other lodgings are often required to collect tax on behalf of the local government. If you don’t pay, they might be held responsible for the charge themselves. This could result in them refusing to let you stay until the fee is settled. To avoid any hiccups, make sure to pay the specified amount when requested!
