What our travel insurance expert says

"Its islands, large coastline, and popular city break locations, make Portugal a hugely popular holiday destination for UK tourists.

But like many European cities and holiday resorts, crime, especially pickpocketing, can be common. You might think you’ll be ok without insurance for a few days break to Lisbon or Porto, but having travel insurance can stop you losing out financially. In the event of theft of your belongings. "

Medical care in Portugal

You’ll need a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to access some free healthcare in Portugal. However, these cards don’t cover everything, and without travel insurance, you could still face costs for:

  • Changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • Additional treatment costs
  • Medical repatriation to the UK
  • Non-urgent treatments
  • Private healthcare and clinics

UK prescriptions aren’t recognised in Portugal, so make sure to carry enough medication for your entire trip. If you need a repeat prescription, visit a local health centre or hospital A&E, but be aware you might need to pay for it.

Always contact your insurance company as soon as possible if you need medical assistance. The FDCO has a list of medical centres and hospitals that speak English.

Tips for travelling to Portugal

Time zones

Mainland Portugal and Madeira share the same time as the UK, but the Azores are one hour behind.

Driving to Portugal

Check that your UK car insurance covers you for driving abroad – most will include at least 30 days of third-party cover.

Don’t discount out of season

Portugal is a summer hotspot, but places like the Algarve and Madeira stay warm even in the off-season. Lisbon is one of Europe’s warmer capitals, making it a great winter city break. Plus, you’ll probably save money on flights and accommodation while avoiding the tourist crowds from November to March.

Consider Portuguese business hours

Outside of major cities, businesses and attractions can open late or close early, especially in hot weather. Do a bit of research on the places you want to visit so you can make the most of your time.

If you’re vegetarian

Portuguese cuisine is very meat-based, so vegetarians should be cautious. Even popular vegetable soups like Caldo Verde often contain sausage. Make sure to check menus ahead of time to find veggie-friendly spots.

Travel around Lisbon

For easy and affordable travel around Lisbon, grab a Viva Viagem card. It costs just 50 cents and is valid for a year. Load it with cash to use the city’s trams, buses, trains, and ferries – or get 24 hours of unlimited travel for around €6.40. Lisbon’s public transport is excellent, so take full advantage during your trip!
