Losing your passport can be stressful. First, you need to cancel your lost or stolen passport before you can apply for a replacement. This step is important to protect yourself from identity theft and to ensure that your passport can't be misused. Yikes!

Once your passport is cancelled, you can apply for a replacement. You have 2 options: you can apply online or by using a paper application form.

Online application: If you choose to apply online, you'll need a few things ready:

  • A digital photo that meets the passport requirements
  • A payment method, such as a credit or debit card
  • A countersignatory, who is someone that can confirm your identity

Paper application form: If you prefer to apply using a paper form, which you can get from the Post Office, you'll need:

  • A payment method (this could be a cheque or postal order)
  • 2 identical printed photos that meet passport photo requirements
  • Countersignatories - you'll need 2 people to confirm your identity

Once you've got everything ready, follow the instructions to submit your application and get your replacement passport on the way.

What documents do I need to replace a lost passport?

Need to replace your lost passport pronto? If you need an emergency travel document or a passport replacement, you'll need a few essential documents:

  • 2 identical passport photos: These need to meet the standard passport photo guidelines.
  • Proof of ID: A valid British driving licence is a good option.
  • Evidence of UK citizenship: This could be a photocopy of your old passport or your birth certificate.
  • Proof of travel: If you're applying for an emergency travel document, you'll need to provide proof of your travel plans, such as a flight ticket.

Make sure you have these documents sorted before you start your application to avoid any delays.

Replacing a lost passport does come with a fee, so it’s good to know the costs upfront:

If applying online: The cost is £88.50. This option is cheaper and may be more convenient.

If applying via paper application: The cost is £100. This method might be better if you prefer handling physical documents or if you don't have easy access to a computer.

Payment methods:

For both online and paper applications, you can pay using a credit or debit card.

If you need your passport urgently, you might consider using the Fast Track service, which is more expensive but gets your passport to you faster. Keep in mind that if you need new passport photos, there could be an additional cost for getting these done professionally.

Does travel insurance cover a lost or stolen passport?

Most travel insurance policies cover lost, stolen, or damaged passports. Some insurers even go the extra mile by offering help and advice on how to replace your passport while you’re abroad.

But, to make a successful claim, you’ll need to prove that you were keeping your passport safe at the time it was lost or stolen. For example, it shouldn’t have been left unattended or somewhere easily accessible to others.

It’s also worth noting that exactly what’s covered can vary between different policies and travel insurance providers. So, you'll need to double-check your policy details to make sure you’re fully covered. For instance, some insurers might not ask you to pay an excess if you’re claiming for a stolen passport.

On average, it takes about 3 weeks to replace a lost passport. But be aware that during busy times, like the summer holidays, it can take up to 10 weeks—or sometimes even longer. If your travel plans are coming up, use our passport checker tool to see when your passport expires. If it's expiry date is coming up, you can apply as soon as possible to avoid any last-minute stress. You can track your passport application online, so you can see how long it should take.

Can I apply for a fast track passport if mine is lost or stolen?

Yes, if you’re travelling within the next 6 weeks, you can speed things up by using the Fast Track service. This service aims to get your passport ready in just 1 week and costs £166.50 for adults or £135.50 for children.

However, keep in mind that you can’t use the Fast Track service if you’re already abroad and have lost your passport.

If you need your passport even quicker, there’s also a 1-day premium service available. This costs £207.50 and requires you to attend an appointment, where you’ll receive your new passport on the same day.

Lost your passport while soaking up the sun abroad? Here's what to do to get back on track in no time:

  • Need to travel within the next 6 weeks? You can apply for an emergency travel document. It will allow a single journey, either to return home or to travel to your next destination.
  • Not travelling within the next 6 weeks? You can apply for a replacement passport online, even while you’re still abroad. This option is more convenient if you’ve got some time before your next trip.

An emergency travel document might be just what you need if you've lost your passport while travelling.

How to apply: You can apply for an emergency travel document online, and it costs £100. Here’s what you’ll need to have ready:

  • A valid digital photo that meets the required passport standards
  • Your contact number and email address
  • A payment method (credit or debit card)

Check before you apply. Before you apply, find out if your destinations accept emergency travel documents. Not all countries do, so you need to check this beforehand.

Picking up your document. Once your application is processed, you’ll be notified when and where you can pick up your emergency travel document. This will usually be at the nearest British Embassy, consulate, or high commission.

Processing time. Typically, your emergency travel document will be ready within 2 days of applying. However, there are certain situations where it might take longer, such as:

  • If your old passport has expired
  • If you’re applying on behalf of a child under 16
  • If extra documents or proof is required
  • If you’re required to attend an interview or appointment

If the HM Passport Office loses your passport or any documents during the application, they should contact you directly. They'll also conduct a thorough search to try to locate them.

If your passport or documents were lost in transit to or from the Passport Office, the good news is that the Passport Office will replace them at no cost.

In either case, rest assured that the Passport Office will resolve the situation and ensure you get your passport as quickly as possible.
