What isn't covered

As with any insurance policy, travel insurance with gadget cover has its limitations. Here are some common exclusions to look out for:

  • Pre-existing damage or manufacturer defects: Any issues your device had before your policy started won't be covered.
  • Wear and tear or cosmetic damage: The usual aging and everyday use of your gadgets won't be covered.
  • Negligence: If you damage your device because of careless behaviour, or lose it because you left it unattended, it won't be covered.
  • Loss or theft not reported quickly enough: This'll depend on your insurer, but there's normally a window in which loss or theft should be reported. For example, 24 hours. After this time has passed, your insurance might not cover you.
  • Viruses, loss or damage to data: Gadget insurance is unlikely to cover this. So, it's worthwhile installing anti-virus software and backing up your data to the cloud or an external drive before you travel.
  • The number of gadgets: There's usually a maximum number of gadgets covered. Check for this in your policy details. Any additional gadgets you take won't be covered.

What our travel insurance expert says

"If you're taking multiple gadgets with you on holiday, make sure you check that your policy offers enough cover. Some policies have a limit on how many items are covered. You should also check that the cover limit is enough for your gadgets."
