What is couples travel insurance?

Couples travel insurance, also known as joint travel insurance, is a type of policy designed to cover 2 people travelling together.

It's the same as regular travel insurance. But, it covers both people under one policy. For a couple to qualify, both individuals must be over 18 years old and living at the same address.

Couples' travel insurance can be useful when both travelers have an issue, like delayed flights or lost luggage. You can choose what type of travel insurance policy best suits your needs. For example, single-trip, annual and backpackers' insurance.

What our travel insurance expert says

"Couples' travel insurance can often be cheaper comapred to buying individual policies. But if one of you has a pre-existing medical condition, it might be a different story. It's always a good idea to compare quotes to see what's best for you both."

What does couples travel insurance cover?

Exactly what's covered can differ between providers, so it's important to review the details of the policy carefully before buying your insurance.

Tick

What's normally covered:

  • Medical treatment: Anyone listed on your policy will be covered for emergency medical treatment while you're on your trip.
  • Cancellation cover: Provides cover for your flights or accommodation if you need to cancel your holiday unexpectedly.
  • Theft, accidental damage, or loss: If your personal possessions or baggage go missing or are damaged while you're on holiday. Note that in most cases the maximum amount is shared between both travellers. So, for £1000 cover, you might only get £500 each.
  • Emergency repatriation: If you or anyone listed on your policy falls ill or is seriously injured during your trip and needs to return home.
  • Travel disruption: If you're unable to make your onward travel plans because of bad weather, strikes, or mechanical issues.
Cross

What's normally excluded:

  • Travelling against FCDO advice: If you travel to a country that the FCDO advises against, you won't be covered. This includes countries with travel warnings or any safety and security concerns.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions: Any medical conditions that aren't declared when you buy your policy won't be covered. You might need a specialist policy for these conditions.
  • Incidents involving drugs or alcohol: Any injuries that have occurred while under the influence won't be covered.
  • Known events: This includes natural disasters. If an event like this occurs before you buy your policy and you still travel, you won't be covered.
  • Extreme sports or activities: Activities like scuba diving or skiing usually require a specialist activity travel insurance or winter sports policy. If you want to play a lot of golf on your trip, you'll need specialist golf cover.

Some conditions won't be covered by all providers, so a specialist policy might be needed.

Is couples travel insurance cheaper than taking out individual policies?

When considering cost, a couple's policy can be cheaper than two individual policies:

  • Single-trip travel insurance: You could get a couples' single-trip travel policy for £7.38*, while an individual policy is £5.212.
  • Annual travel insurance: You could get a couples' annual European policy for £18.453, while for an individual it's £10.854.

However, if one person has a pre-existing medical condition, a joint policy could  cost more than 2 individual policies. For example, a joint single-trip policy with one partner declaring anxiety as a medical condition is £13.675, while an annual policy is £26.576.

Ultimately, the right cover is more important than the cheapest policy. Having enough cover for your specific needs is a priority.

What if me and my partner don't live together?

To qualify for a couples travel insurance policy, you need to live at the same address. If you don't, consider other options like group travel insurance.

Can I travel alone on a couples policy?

Whether you can travel alone on a couple's policy depends on the specific terms of the policy. Some annual policies allow solo travel. This can be useful if you're planning trips with friends or visiting family abroad without your partner. Always check the policy details to understand what's covered.
