Find the right student broadband deal for you

Everything you need to know about getting the best student broadband deals – plus tips on what to look out for when you compare quotes.

What is student broadband?

Broadband for students is a budget-friendly option if you’re in higher education. It’s essentially a broadband deal designed for the student lifestyle. Expect shorter, more flexible contracts and special student Wi-Fi offers for multiple people living in the same house.

Typical student Wi-Fi deals come with a 9 or 12-month contract, but other options are available. Generally, the longer the contract, the cheaper the student Wi-Fi deal.

What is student broadband

If you’re looking for the best student broadband deal for you, there are three key things to consider:

1. Price

With student broadband, the cheapest deal isn’t always the best. Paying more for high-speed full fibre broadband could be a wise investment if you’re all gamers or you need fast internet for a file-heavy course like graphic design. But the great thing about a shared house is more people to split the cost of the bills.

However, unless you really need it, it makes sense not to pay extra for ultrafast broadband. If things change, providers will usually let you upgrade mid-contract.

Student broadband deal price tips

It pays to shop around and compare deals. Look out for student Wi-Fi offers that:

  • Won’t increase in price mid-contract.
  • Include phone line rental (most do).
  • Give the option of a broadband deal without line rental.
  • Don’t charge for set-up or activation.
  • Offer unlimited broadband so you don’t pay extra if you go over your allowance.

A student broadband deal that includes access to TV subscriptions, mobile phone services or money-saving offers could also help you cut costs.

Splitting the monthly broadband bill helps too. One housemate’s name would go on the broadband contract and they’d be responsible if payments are late. So, to make sure they're not out of pocket, you could send them a monthly direct debit or open a shared account for bills.

2.Contract length

In most cases, you won’t be looking for a long-term student broadband deal unless you’re planning to stay in your accommodation for a few years. So it’s important to avoid paying for more than you need.

  • 30-day rolling contracts – effectively a ‘no contract’ option. This is the most flexible choice for student internet. Just give your provider a month’s notice if you want to leave. Current prices range from around £20-£60 a month, depending on your provider and broadband speed.
  • 9-month contracts – designed to line up with the academic year, these student broadband contracts start between July and September or October, but they’re not always available.
  • 12-month contracts – may work out cheaper than a nine-month contract, though you could pay for broadband you don’t use if you go home during the holidays. Prices range from £20 to £40 depending on broadband speed.
  • 18-month contracts – often the cheapest option, but only worth it if you’re staying in your student accommodation for more than a year. Prices range from around £20 to £35.

3. Broadband speed

With a few of you online for hours at a time, you may need a fast connection. Maximum download and upload speeds vary by postcode, so you’d have to check if your house’s demand lines up with the available packages

Download speed is how fast you can download or stream content from the internet. Upload speeds cover what you send to the internet, such as your social media posts. The average speeds listed by broadband providers are estimates that at least 50% of customers can expect during peak hours (8pm to 10pm).

Student mobile broadband

If you’re looking for the best student broadband deals, you’ve got plenty of options with a choice of monthly rates, contract lengths and download speeds. To find the right student internet offer for you, always compare quotes and read the small print before committing to anything.

There’s also another option – student mobile broadband. With the roll-out of 5G, this could be a high-speed alternative to a student Wi-Fi deal. In 2023, 85% of the UK had 5G coverage.

You’ll either need a dongle or mobile broadband router to access the service, but you can use it wherever you are, including at home during the holidays. Dongle SIMs are available on 30-day and 12-month contracts, or you can Pay As You Go.

FAQs

Can we get a TV subscription as part of our student broadband deal?

Yes. Many providers offer student Wi-Fi deals with access to TV subscriptions and streaming services like Netflix, Sky Cinema or Sky Sports.

The TV services are unlikely to be free but may be cheaper than paying for a separate contract. Prices start from around £30 a month but could be over £100 if you have full fibre broadband.

Can we get a 9-month student broadband deal?

Yes, but they’re difficult to find. BT and Virgin Media are the main broadband providers offering 9-month broadband contracts for students.

A 30-day rolling contract gives you the flexibility to cancel after nine months, provided you give a month’s notice.

Do we need to buy a broadband router?

No – most student broadband contracts include the router as part of the deal.

Do we have to have a landline?

No – with the rollout of full fibre broadband, you don’t need one. But if superfast services aren’t available in your area yet, most student broadband deals include line rental anyway. Or you can get a broadband deal without line rental.

How long is the average set-up time for student broadband?

The time from placing your order to installation is usually two weeks for new customers, but may be longer if you don’t have a landline. Check when you sign up. If it takes longer than the time promised by your provider, you can make an official complaint.

Plan ahead to make sure you’ve got access when you move in. If you’re in rented accommodation, make sure your landlord is happy for you to install broadband. You also need to make sure that someone is at home on the day of installation.

Do we have to prove we're students to get a student broadband deal?

Some providers may ask to see a ‘.ac.uk’ email address before they offer you a student Wi-Fi deal.
