What is multi bike insurance?

Multi bike insurance covers you to ride multiple motorbikes on a single policy.

It can be a useful and cost-effective option if you have multiple motorbikes for different purposes. For example, a 50cc motorbike for commuting and a 125cc motorbike for leisure. Or you might be a collector of classic bikes and want an efficient way to cover them all.

Insuring all of your motorbikes under one policy can make it easier to manage. It means you'll only need to keep track of:

  • One application
  • One renewal date
  • One no-claims bonus

It also means you only need to pay once to cover all of your motorcycles.

All of our multi bike policies are provided by our trusted parter BeMoto.

Who is BeMoto?

BeMoto is a motorbike insurance company run by a group of motorcycle specialists. Their team can help you get a great deal on your insurance.

Their multi bike policies include:

  • Legal expenses cover up to £100,000 and 90 days' EU cover for all motorbikes on your policy.
  • No amendment fee, so you can change your policy whenever you need. If you need to add a new motorbike, add a modification or move home, you can do so for free.
  • They cover almost any motorbike - whether you've got a mix of classics and superbikes, trikes, modified bikes, quads and scooters. You can even include laid-up motorbikes that have a SORN.
  • There's no limit to the number of motorbikes you can include on one policy. So you don't have to worry about finding a new policy if you add a new motorbike to your collection.

What affects the price of multi bike insurance?

Insurers base their price on several risk factors, including:

You:

  • Your age. Younger riders tend to pay more as they're less experienced on the roads. This means they're at higher risk of being involved in accidents.
  • Your driving history. If you have any past claims or convictions, you're seen as more risky to insurers. So, you're likely to pay more.
  • Where you live. Living in an area with high crime rates means your motorbikes are more at risk of theft, increasing your costs.

Your motorbike:

  • The number of motorbikes you have. The more motorbikes you want to insure, the more your insurance is likely to cost.
  • The value of your motorbikes. Insurers calculate multi bike insurance prices based on your highest-value motorbike. And the more motorbikes you add, the higher your costs are likely to be.
  • Any modifications. Modifications can make repairs more expensive and time-consuming. Modified bikes might also need a specialist to fix them after an accident. This menas you're likely to pay more if your motorbike has any modifications.

What our motorbike insurance expert says

"A multi-bike insurance policy can be cheaper than individual policies for each motorbike. This is because you only need cover for riding one motorbike at a time. You'll still be insured to ride any of your motorbikes when you want to, but any you're not using are only covered for fire and theft when they're at home."

What does multi bike insurance cover?

There are 3 levels of cover to choose from:

  • Third-party is the minimum level of cover you're legally required to have. It covers damage to other vehicles and property as a result of an accident that was your fault. It doesn't cover any damage to your own motorbike. Although it offers the lowest level of cover, third-party insurance is often the more expensive option.
  • Third-party, fire and theft gives you the same level of cover as third-party. But it also covers repairs or replacement costs for your motorbike if it's stolen or damaged by fire.
  • Comprehensive offers the highest level of protection. As well as covering other people and their property, you're also covered for damage to your own motorbike. Comprehensive is normally the cheaper insurance option, despite offering the most.

There are also 4 classes of use for motorbike insurance:

  • Social, domestic and pleasure (SD&P) means you only use your motorbike for social reasons. This can include days out or shopping.
  • Social and commuting (SDPC) covers you for social trips as well as commuting to a single permanent place of work, like an office. This also includes travelling to a train or bus station as part of your commute.
  • Class 1 business use covers you to use your motorbike to travel to multiple places for work. For example, if you use your motorbike to travel to meet customers or suppliers.
  • Courier, delivery or dispatch insurance is for delivery riders or couriers. If this applies to you, you may need a specialist insurer.

How many motorbikes can I insure on one policy?

This depends on the provider you're with. Some set a cap on the number of motorbikes you can insure. But others allow you to add an unlimited number of motorbikes to your policy. It's worth checking the policy details before you buy to make sure you're getting the cover you need.

Our partner BeMoto allows you to insure as many motorbikes as you like under one policy. You can also add more motorbikes during your policy if you need to. This can be useful if you're planning to grow your collection.

What optional policy add-ons can I get with multi bike insurance?

Optional policy extras vary between insurers. The ones you choose to add to your insurance depend on your needs. Multi bike policies from BeMoto come with a few common extras as standard. For example, they include EU cover for up to 90 days and motor legal protection.

You can also choose from a range of policy extras to increase your cover:

  • Excess contribution cover means you can claim back up to £500 of any excess you pay following a claim.
  • Licence defence cover provides legal assistance if you need to dispute a motoring charge.
  • Personal accident cover helps cover costs for medical treatment or hospital stays following an accident.
  • Helmet and leathers insurance covers the cost of replacing your helmet or safety clothing if it's damaged in an accident.

Is multi bike insurance right for me?

Before getting cover, you should make sure a multi bike policy will work for you. There are a few factors worth considering:

Compare the costs. It's always worth comparing your multi bike quote against the cost of insuring each motorbike individually to make sure you're getting the best price.

Work out what optional extras you need. Adding policy extras like breakdown cover or legal expenses can increase your price. Especially since you're adding each extra to every motorbike on the policy.

Consider whether you want to insure multiple riders. A multi bike policy is designed to insure one rider on multiple motorbikes. Adding riders might be more expensive than insuring the motorbikes separately.

How do I claim on my insurance?

Contact your insurer within 24 hours to make a claim on your policy. You can find the contact details for your insurance provider on your policy document or on their website.

Keep any evidence, such as dashcam footage or receipts from a garage who carried out any repairs. You need this to help with your claim. If you've been given a crime reference number, you should also give this to your insurer.
